A language course you can walk around in.
School pilots and waitlist open.
Culangex is building Journey Within: Lexicons & Lore, an open-world RPG that teaches language through the people, rituals and stories that make it usable. Novatrax works inside Culangex as its product and strategy team. Below, the work is told through the five stages of Play to Outcome.
The engagement
Culangex brought the vision, the educators and the cultural partners. Novatrax brings the product team, embedded in the company rather than briefed from outside. As a Fractional Innovation Partner, we provide:
- Product strategy and roadmap
- Experience architecture and concept development
- Pilot oversight for school rollouts
- Audience and market intelligence
- Executive advisory to the founding team
01 / Decode:
The outcome
Most learners quit before they can hold a conversation. Vocabulary-first apps also strip out the culture that makes a language usable. For heritage languages like Yorùbá and Zulu, fewer young learners means a thinner future for the language itself.
Together with the founding team, we defined the outcome: conversational fluency and cultural competence, measurable enough for a school to adopt and fun enough for a family to choose on a Friday night. Three audiences, one product: classrooms, families and self-directed learners.

02 / Design:
The experience
Every mechanic serves the outcome.

- 01
Every local is a practice partner. Characters share customs, body language and history, and they will call out your mistakes. A Guide coaches you through it.
- 02
Progress is earned. New content unlocks only after mastery is shown, so pace stays honest.
- 03
One framework underneath: five domains (sound, vocabulary, grammar, real-world communication, culture) across five phases of growth, from Awaken to Lead.
- 04
Built for every kind of learner: tutorials, mini-games and open-world immersion. Players with some language already can switch hints off in one click.
- 05
A Travel Tablet and Journal tie every word to the place you learned it.
- 06
Culture is the content: songs, proverbs, rituals and humour that textbooks rarely teach.
03 / Build:
The standard
Production runs as one joint team, and authenticity is a production requirement, not a review step. Learning content is authored by licensed world-language and IB educators and aligned to ACTFL, WIDA and CEFR. Cultural content is co-created with community custodians, and elders, academics and local creators approve every detail before it ships.
04 / Activate:
The route to players
We planned three distribution routes together:

- 01
School licensing that starts with a classroom pilot.
- 02
A family mode built for play across ages.
- 03
A paid Creator Program that brings culture-bearers in as contributors with revenue share.
Museums, archives and tourism bodies can also partner to turn their own heritage into playable worlds.
05 / Measure:
Defined before launch
The metrics are set and published ahead of launch:
- 01
Learners: domain-level mastery, time to novice-high proficiency, speaking confidence.
- 02
Engagement: session length, return rate, classroom adoption.
- 03
Community partners: cultural content taught and fair pay for culture-bearers.
Results will be reported here from the first pilots.
What this proves
Some organisations don’t need a one-off build. They need a product team that thinks in outcomes from day one, without the overhead of hiring one. Embedded with Culangex, we keep every product decision tied to a single result: learners who can hold a real conversation. That is what a Fractional Innovation Partner is for, whether you’re an edtech founder, an institution or a growing company.
